Based in Stellenbosch South Africa, each one of Van der Walt’s works is signed with a simple ‘Cab’ – a childhood nickname derived from Cobus, and the name the artist is most at home with. Another of Van der Walt’s trademarks is his innovative system of titling his paintings. ‘Cabtography,’ as he’s coined it, works by inserting the geographical coordinates of the scene captured on the particular canvas. Thus, each painting is located in an actual context, emphasising the fundamental importance of place and space.
His canvases can be found in the finest homes, institutions, and corporations across the world. The ‘name-drop’ list cannot be published, but includes presidents, a king, an archbishop, a killer, several international rock stars/musicians, mining magnates, international hedge fund managers, a FHM year’s sexiest amongst others. Capturing a place, a moment in time, the personality and presence of the animal as well as an environment, Cab paints some of the finest wildlife paintings in the world.
